Check out what they have to say below.
COMPLEX PICTURES is an exhibition that brings digital work into the same space with displays of physical collage pieces and is an attempt to bring more recognition to artists who are invested in this area as a primary mode of practice.
At its most fundamental level, collage is a language of visual math, of addition to and subtraction from source material. In the book What Kind of Collage is That?, Katie Blake frames digital collage as “created partially or entirely with electronic means, such as software like Photoshop.” It’s not digital art in general, and it’s not simply a scan of a paper-and-glue collage. Artists were invited to expound on their collage methodologies, and the portable, location-independent aspect of working digitally was a consistent theme.
The 72 images accepted through the international open call represent styles of work ranging from narrative to surreal to abstract. Anthony D Kelly’s skill in integrating complex and visually rich material into strong compositions stands out, as does Diana Jahns’s use of layering with intelligent and poetic restraint. Jenny Lloyd gives us a maximalist approach with every element an asset to the overall whole. Nafisa Jabbarova draws upon a surrealist dream world with active, game-like scenes. Roberto Jackson Harrington introduces us to digital assemblage, presenting imaginative configurations of 3D objects and tableaus. Clive Knights’s work with physical transparency rather than software-facilitated layering expands the concept of digital collage. Eva Maria Reinhardt demonstrates the power of well-placed details such as a single, delicate line.
The exhibition will be shown on a dedicated screen at Collage-O-Rama (Slip Gallery, Seattle) as well as on the Special Agent Collage Collective website beginning on May 9.

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration held on the second Saturday of May. Initiated by Kolaj Magazine, the day is a call for artists and venues around the world to celebrate collage — a medium that brings together disparate pieces to create something new. World Collage Day reminds us of the power of connection.
As Kolaj editor Ric Kasini Kadour says, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honour this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”
This is an adult workshop (18+), and everyone is welcome.
Help us celebrate the joy of collage and community. Let’s make together!

⚡️⚡️ITS ALIVE⚡️⚡️
Artists interpret Shelley's novel in the context of today’s world, addressing:
⚡️Science and artificial intelligence: Echoing Shelley's cautionary tale, artists reflect on the ethical dilemmas of unchecked technological advancement.
⚡️Queerness and intersectional identities: The monster’s isolation becomes a metaphor for marginalization, offering a lens on contemporary social dynamics.
⚡️Narcissism and modern relationships: Victor Frankenstein’s self-absorption provides a framework for examining personal and societal disconnection.
This exhibition invites viewers to engage with Frankenstein in a new light, where past and present collide in striking visual form.

I was delighted to have a recent conversation with fellow collagist and arts writer extraordinaire Kerrie More. She was in the process of putting together a fantastic article on the topic of creative flow. Flow states are experiences of being completely in the moment and energized, while drawing upon your own deep internal resources of knowledge, skills and experience to make intuitive moment to moment choices. They can often be marked with a sense of ease or even joy whilst undertaking a complex task. Flow states regularly lie at the heart of creative practices.
Her article has appeared in the most recent edition of Uppercase magazine which is all about time and transformation, and it is a wonderful and intriguing read. It was great to hear her insights garnered from research and interviews with other creative practitioners.
Its so interesting to discover other peoples experiences of flow and the little rituals and practices that they maintain to drop into these states more readily.
What a beautiful article and magazine!
Other fantastic creatives featured in this article include:
Wendy Solganik, Rene’ Shoemaker, Judy Ormshaw, Ellen Howard, Cheryl Chudyk, Janet Guertin and Kim Koehler. Also, the fabulous Andrea Lewicki.

⚡️Upcoming Exhibition - ‘Mapping Stories | Scéalmhapáil'⚡️
Opening on Friday, 28 February at 5.00pm.
The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co.Mayo, Ireland.
F23 AN24
Exhibition runs until Saturday, 5 April 2025. All Welcome. The Linenhall Arts Centre and Visual Artists Ireland (VAI) are delighted to present ‘Mapping Stories | Scéalmhapáil' - featuring Thomas Brawn; Ann Conmy; Joanna Hopkins; Louise Hynes; Davinia Johnson; Anthony D Kelly; Katherine (Kate) Kelly; Jo Killalea; Sharon Ní Chuilibín and Martina O’Connor. Curated by Marianne O’Kane Boal.
About the Exhibition:
Mapping Stories | Scéalmhapáil' is a group exhibition at the Linenhall Arts Centre to mark the culmination of the Bolay Programme 2024. It features ten Mayo-based artists who have been mentored by curator Marianne O'Kane Boal over a three month period in preparation for this exhibition. The exhibition includes a diverse range of art forms; drawing, painting, sculpture, print, photography, film, audio and collage. These narratives within the exhibition are personal and collective, documenting self and other. They have an importance within County Mayo but equally contain a wider significance. Such multivalent approaches to mapping stories create a rich and nuanced series of works that reflect the shared discussion and reflection that was conducted in the preparation phase for the exhibition.
From the Curator 2024:
“Working with this group of artists and curating the exhibition has been a pleasure. It has been rewarding to individually mentor each of the ten artists and to explore a range of approaches and working methods. It has been important to have a common goal of the exhibition to prepare for and this has ensured that there is a collective purpose for the group but equally a place for each individual artist to reflect on their work and the theme. The Bolay programme delivered by the Linenhall Arts Centre in association with Visual Artists Ireland is an invaluable support to Mayo artists and it has been a joy to be part of”. Marianne O’Kane Boal, Curator.

🎪🔍 Children’s Book Project Announcement: Fleadom Flea Circus🔎🎪
Roll Up! Roll Up!
Many great things happened this year, and one of the best was to begin collaborating on a children’s book with my dear friend Marta Janik. Drawing on our dual interests in illustration and circus culture we have delved into the unusual universe of Flea Circuses to develop a visually rich and vibrant world. The book is almost complete and some of our illustrations have won a place in an upcoming exhibition resulting from this years Clairvoyants children’s book competition. This competition is hosted bi-annually by the Dwie Siostry publishing house and our project was chosen as one of the most interesting projects out of 554 submissions!
Flea Circuses once existed throughout the world and actually involved trained fleas performing tricks! There was also a variant of these Circuses which utilized magnets and other mechanical devices to simulate the presence of performing fleas. These were known as “Humbug Shows”. Although the amount of Flea Circuses in existence today can be counted on one hand, they were strange and fascinating phenomenon with a history all of their own.
More about our book below:
“Fleadom is a raucous, fun fueled journey through life at an extravagant Flea Circus. In this magical setting, fleas, animals and humans all collaborate as equals to perform wondrous and reality defying stunts. Under our little big top we learn that creatures and people don’t have to be big in size to be important or to do amazing things.
Rich with tiny details, hidden meanings, and historical and cultural references, this is a book that invites parents and children to delve into its pages and explore its magical world again and again, each time finding some new and interesting details that elaborate on the colourful universe within.
Small and unusual wonders do exist when we pay careful attention to the world around us. For example, I invite you to consider a flea learning to juggle on a unicycle, and then tell me you are not impressed.”
Don’t get too itchy! More Fleadom Coming Soon!

⚡️KOLAJ LIVE ONLINE: Frankenstein Book Launch - Saturday December 7, 2024, 6-9PM GMT⚡️
A cohort of international collage artists worked together to illustrate Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's classic 19th century novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus with the 21st century reader in mind. Artists created illustrations that connected Shelley's text to contemporary issues. Artists explored the role of science and artificial intelligence, queerness, intersectional identities, narcissism, and modern relationships. Seventy-six illustrations appear in a new publication of the novel and in a folio of twenty-four prints available for purchase and as a traveling exhibition. In this Kolaj LIVE Online, project art director Christopher Kurts will speak about the project and interview artists who contributed to it. "Shelley's timelessness is proven by our ability to use her novel to reflect on our world today," said Kolaj Institute Director Ric Kasini Kadour. "Collage artists, with their unique ability to transcend scale, place, and history, are well-suited to giving us pictures that bring vintage texts into the contemporary moment."

⚡️✂️ Featured Artist in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein: Kolaj Edition✂️⚡️
⚡️⚡️!!!!!ITS ALIVE!!!⚡️⚡️
In the Autumn of 2023, I had the real pleasure of teaming up with a whole crew of creaturely collaborators to illustrate a new version of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. It was macabre delight to work with these monsters on dissecting Mary Shelly’s seminal work of proto-sciencefiction. It was an amazing process to spend time thinking about and drawing out the colourful, magical and fearful imagery within. I had a lot of fun working on the illustrations in this version with our ghastly group, including my dear friend and regular collaborator Marta Janik.
I am delighted to announce that the book is now ready for release!
See more from the publishers below:
”This new version of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's classic 19th century novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus features seventy-six illustrations by International Collage Artists who delved into the novel's rich narrative and visual potential and created thought-provoking artworks that reflect the essence of Frankenstein in a 21st century context. “Frankenstein,” writes artist David Edward Johnson, “The name alone conjures a lightning storm of images. From corpses, unholy and unearthed, to gothic laboratories, alive with galvanic impulse, to personal loss, longing, and anger. Shelley’s 1818 masterwork is locked in our collective unconscious like a fever dream. Since childhood, I have been in love with its silent shudders and moss-covered 19th-century tableaus.” Artists created illustrations that connected Shelley's text to contemporary issues. Artists explored the role of science and artificial intelligence, queerness, intersectional identities, narcissism, and modern relationships.
